Career Objective:           

            To serve as the Scout Executive in a top caliber council which will allow me to utilize my successes and experiences in volunteer and Executive Board recruiting, fundraising, membership/fiscal management and staff leadership and development.

 

Background Summary:           

            Experience to date includes a marked proficiency in volunteer and youth recruitment in urban, suburban and rural areas with changing and varying demographics, volunteer management, fundraising, endowment, special event management, staff leadership and motivation, budget development and accountability, volunteer cultivation, developing and working with committees, supervision of personnel, camping and property management, program administration and public relations.

 

Selected Achievements:

Fundraising

  • As Director of Field Service coordinated the fundraising efforts of the council field team which resulted in a 29.8% increase over five years in FOS from $369,102 to $479,300. Popcorn increased over the same span from $261,759 to $407,155 for a 55% gain. All areas of funding increased by 18% in the last four years from $1,501,468 to $1,784,312.

  • In 2011, developed, planned and implemented a Merit Badge Sponsorship program which raised $28,000 in new money at year-end and has generated an additional $86,000 in the last two years.  

  • Organized and managed unique Council-wide FOS Kickoff event that netted $145,000 which included $52,000 in new or increased gifts improving the Council’s cash flow during a seasonally lean period. Secured all underwriting as well as event speakers. Working through the district finance committees, each district held a Good Scout event raising an additional $94,000.

  • Secured government contracts through inner city schools in the amount of $3.75 million over five years which was used for after school Learning for Life programs in hard to serve communities representing a 78% increase in funding.

  • Conceived and developed program and deliverables resulting in a multi-year foundation grant in the amount of $200,000 per year for the last four years. Proceeds accrued to our Council’s award winning Outreach and after school science (STEM) programs.

 

Program

  • Served as reservation/camp director of Resica Falls Scout Reservation for four years and managed a $615,000 camp budget with large surpluses each year. Through the Islamic Relations Committee of the Western Region conceived of and planned the first of its kind Muslim Camporee beginning in 2011 and continuing with more than 400 participants each year increasing our footprint and respect and welcome in that community.

 

Fiscal management

  • Coordinated the efforts of the Council managers as well as key members of the Executive Board in the development of the Council’s $5.4 million budget for each of the last three years. Organized project codes by department and manager to better control and understand the budget allowing for more efficient and reliable budget forecasting.

 

Membership

  • Developed, managed and controlled a year-round membership growth plan that has resulted in 7.7% growth throughout my current assignment in one of the most diverse and culturally complex regions in the country. This is among my proudest achievements. Exploring membership increased 56.7% over the same span. Membership retention has remained above the 75th percentile. Only council in Area 3, WR to achieve the 2012 Pathfinder Award for Cub Scout Pack growth and the only 200 Council in all of the Western Region to achieve membership growth in 2013. As of September 2014 have achieved 42 consecutive months of JTE growth in membership.

 

Volunteer Recruiting

  • Working through the nominating committee process increased the average size of our five district committees from 22.9 to 35 members per committee achieving Gold status. Working through key volunteers 28 new Board members were recruited in the last three years from a wide range of industries including a police chief, sheriff, 2  Rotary International presidents, several CEO’s and an Army General. Our Executive Board is envied by many local nonprofits.

 

Director of Field Service/Chief Operating Officer

San Leandro – March 2009 to present

            Serve as the Chief Operating Officer of the council; responsible for all traditional scouting and Learning for Life programs with a total membership of 15,965 youth. Staff development and supervision of 13 professional staff, 4 full time council employees, and 75 outreach and program specialists. Twelve professional staff members have received promotions during my tenure. Serve as advisor to the following committees: commissioner cabinet, membership, popcorn, advancement, marketing, budget, youth protection, Jewish, Latter Day Saints, Catholic, and Sea Scouting. In addition, serve as the Council spokesperson dealing with all media relations with an emphasis in working with media, volunteers and donors as it relates to our constitutional issues.

 

Assistant Director of Field Service:  San Francisco Bay Area Council

San Leandro - March, 2007 to February, 2009

            Responsible for all traditional scouting to include outreach programs. Staff development and supervision of 9 professional staff, 1 paraprofessional, and 20 Scoutreach Specialists overseeing more than 14,000 youth. Increased FOS over the previous year by $53,509 for a total of $422,611.  Recruited high level community volunteers to fill vacancies in District Chairmen, District Commissioner and Finance Chairmen roles in all traditional districts enhancing the visibility and increasing community involvement.

 

Field Director: Chicago Area Council

Chicago – May, 2004 to February, 2007

            Responsible for the largest traditional service area in the council, supervising six field executives. Increased popcorn in the service area from $437,923 to $520,195 in two years representing an 18% increase. Unit growth was 11% over a three year period representing an increase of 31 new units.

 

Field Director:  Baltimore Area Council

Baltimore - November, 2001 to April, 2004

            Responsible for five large districts encompassing suburban, urban and rural areas.  Served as the council training advisor.  Gave leadership to event fundraisers which had over a 110% increase over the prior year.  In two years, units had increased by 27 overall with a 4% growth in Boy Scout youth and 57% growth in Venturing youth.

 

Cradle of Liberty Council

Philadelphia - March, 1993 to October, 2001

            Held various positions from District Executive, District Director and Field Director encompassing urban, suburban and rural areas. Served as the Council Advisor for Woodbadge, Zoo relations, JLT, Robert Morris Fundraising Event, Jewish Committee on Scouting, and the Training Committee. As a Field Director achieved Quality Service Area three years in a row with FOS growing from $80,446 to $152,134. Product sales increased from $35,000 to $302,770 in the same three years.

            Graduate of East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, PA.  Bachelor’s Degree in Economics.

            Eagle Scout, Senior Leadership Essentials certified, 2013 National Jamboree sub camp staff, Fiscal Management Course certified, James E.
